Are You as Safe as You Think?

Want to know what items a burglar targets first? Check out the exclusive interview with Matt West for details.

Each year in Alabama, burglars break into more than 50 thousand homes.

While it's easy to think burglary is something more common on t-v...you're more at risk than you think.

"People kind of feel like it's not going to happen to them," Matt West said. West is a security salesman for DSI.

Most people also think robberies occur in houses that are out in the country and without neighbors. We spoke with a reformed burglar who told us otherwise.

"If you have a criminal mind, you'll think of any way to get into a house," they said.

Criminals can get into a house in a lot of ways. The most common entry point is the front door. It's easy to get to and has a quick path to a getaway vehicle. Windows are also a viable option, but the fear of creating a lot of noise can keep burglars from using them.

They can get in quickly and get out just as fast. We asked West how long it may take to clean out a normal ranch-style house.

"Probably three or four minutes at the most to get in here and get back out, or less," he said.

So a couple of years worth of work to fill up a house, and you could lose it in less than five minutes.

"In most cases people react, they don't proact."

So the big question is, will you react or proact?
