MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Officials say all high school students
in Montgomery Public Schools will be required to walk through metal
detectors when they arrive for classes.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/vi8eFu )
that Robert E. Lee High School was the first to have the metal
detectors installed.

Tom Salter, who is a spokesman for the school district, says students and visitors at all traditional high schools will be required to go through the metal detectors.

Salter says the detectors were installed in response to recent
events in the community, but he did not provide more specific
details to the newspaper.

Salter says that in all, the district is expected to have about
31 walk-through metal detectors at the high school. They cost about
$45,000 and will be paid for through federal funds.
