TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- House Education Committee Chairman Bill Proctor is seeking balance between moving Florida's State University System forward and allowing each school to fulfill its individual mission.

The panel on Thursday finished the last of its individual discussions with each of the 11 university presidents.

Proctor said in a statement that it was clear the universities reject a "one size fits all" approach that restricts growth and stifles innovation.

He noted some are looking for autonomy to set tuition while others want to advance programs that equip students for success in the global economy.

Proctor said the committee is beginning to sift through the information provided by the presidents before taking any action.

House Speak Dean Cannon has criticized Florida's higher education system as being unfocused and headed for mediocrity.
