MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The State Board of Education has voted to require candidates for Alabama's vacant 2-year college chancellor post to have an earned doctorate from an accredited college or university.
A proposal with that requirement passed 4-3 at the board's monthly meeting Thursday. Two members were absent.
The board had been debating the requirements in recent weeks, with some wanting to start qualifications with a bachelor's degree and minimum of five years executive management experience.
They said leadership and management skills were becoming more important given the department's growing emphasis on work force
development.
But others said setting the bar that low was insulting and would strip the position of some of its status. The board also hired an executive search firm to help in the national hunt for a new chancellor.
