BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - About 3,500 youths are in the Birmingham
area this week to compete in the 2009 National Forensic League's
speech and debate tournament.

The weeklong tournament began Monday at six host sites in Shelby
County.

Oliver Parker, debate coach at Spain Park in Hoover, said students will debate about controversial issues, from politics to current events.

Parker said the students will then switch sides to argue the opposite point of view.

While many people have a fear of public speaking, Montgomery Academy debate coach Jay Rye said the National Forensic League has
grown by about 5 percent a year for the past few years.
