Low enrollment reason for Daleville Middle School closing
Because of limited funding and low enrollment, one Wiregrass middle school is closing its doors.

Andrew Kelley is the superintendent of Daleville city schools. He says the decision to close the middle school was made last month.
Proration and low enrollment numbers are to blame for the closing.
"We estimate that we could save anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 dollars by making this move," says Kelley.
Ideally, 500 students would keep the school open; currently there are less than 400. However Kelley says the move isn't all doom and gloom.
"By the reconfiguration we would then qualify for a full assistant principal you know and we would also qualify for a full assistant principal and we would also qualify for a full assistant principal at the elementary school so in some areas we are going to gain."
Kelley says funding is based on the amount of students in a school.
More students mean more money and for Principal Betty Flemming, she says students aren’t losing sleep over the switch.
"I have talked to a couple of students and they seemed to be excited about it," says Flemming.
Back in 1992, a similar switch was made between the schools. Officials say the middle school will not reopen until more students are enrolled.
