WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) today responded to President Obama’s comments on “sequestration,” or the looming budget cuts which disproportionately affect the military and are scheduled to go into effect next month.

Rep. Roby, chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, voted against the Budget Control Act that threatened the sequester military cuts, and said rather than continue a media blame game, President Obama and Senate Democrats should join the House in actually trying to solve the sequester problem.

“The House has twice passed a reasonable plan to replace the arbitrary sequester cuts with targeted reductions that align with the nation’s priorities,” Rep. Roby said. “It doesn’t have to be this complicated. If the President and Senate Democrats disagree with our sequester replacement plan, they should come up with their own so we can begin to hammer out an agreement. The problem is they see every decision as an opportunity to raise taxes, and that’s unfortunate.

“Just this morning I met with army aviation commanders who illustrated how serious the consequences of the sequester will be for our nation’s military. The sequester is real, and it’s coming. It’s past time President Obama and Senate Democrats got serious on a plan to avoid sequester.”
