Poll Shows Democrats in Danger of Losing Control

CBS has released a new poll examining what Americans think about their political leaders and how the tea party could impact the midterm elections.

Thursday night President Obama was campaigning for democrats with the midterm elections less than a month away. But a new CBS NEWS poll shows a growing number of Americans are unhappy with the job he's doing.

Only 38 percent like the way the President is handling the economy, the lowest number since he took office.

"It's not getting better fast enough,” said White House press secretary Robert Gibbe, “which is understandable and the President is as frustrated as I'm sure the 605 or so respondents to that poll."

21 months ago two-out-of-three Americans expected him to be a good president. Now two-out-of-three expect him to be average or poor.

And that's bad news for his party.

If the election were held today, 45 percent of likely voters would choose the Republican candidate, 37 percent, the Democrat.

At stake in this mid-term election is control of the House and the Senate. The latest numbers show the Democrats are at risk of losing both to the Republicans.

The GOP could also get a boost from the Tea Party. 81 percent of members say they intend to vote republican next month.

"I think there's a lot of anger out there as to what's been going on the last couple of years, and I think the tea party is representing a lot of that,” said poll participant Mark Evans.

But the poll also found only 30 percent of the country believes members of the tea party reflect the views of most Americans.

With the election just weeks away members of both parties will be out in force to get voters on their side.
