'Modifying' Miranda Changes the Political Debate

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Eric Holder and the rest of the Obama administration are suddenly playing offense in the political free-for-all over how best to wage the war on terror.

Criticized for months by Republicans as not being tough on terrorism, the administration is offering to work with Congress to modify the public safety exception on Miranda warnings.

With the Miranda issue on the front burner, the two questions of where to try the 9/11 terrorist suspects and where to relocate detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison have faded. A former Bush administration lawyer, Michael Edney, says it will be many months before the Obama administration decides those two controversial matters.
