TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida's two legislative leaders are joining Gov. Rick Scott in raising concerns about federal budget cuts.
House Speaker Will Weatherford and Senate President Don Gaetz on Monday wrote letters to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and members of Congress asking them to spare federal military technicians from furloughs.
The furloughs scheduled to start July 8 are a result of budget cuts that kicked in earlier this year and just now rippling through government.
The two Republican legislative leaders said it was wrong to have furloughs occur during hurricane season because they could impact the readiness of the Florida National Guard.
Scott has already said the cuts mean nearly 1,000 Florida National Guardsmen and technicians will have to take furloughs during the summer.
Gaetz and Weatherford called the furloughs "unconscionable."
