WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments after the TVA Board announced it would complete a nuclear reactor unit at the Bellefonte site in North Alabama.
“I applaud the TVA board for voting today to complete a nuclear reactor unit at the Bellefonte site in North Alabama. This is a project of immense importance to me. I have personally visited Bellefonte numerous times, studied its capabilities, and met with local community leaders. If completed, Bellefonte will be a valuable source of safe, affordable, reliable, and clean energy for the region for decades to come. Completing Bellefonte will benefit TVA ratepayers, facilitate economic growth in the region, and enable TVA to meet its commitment to be a leader in providing low-cost, cleaner energy. It will further establish TVA as a leader in nuclear power. The safety of our nuclear plants must be a top priority. As a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, I have had the opportunity recently to question members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to receive commitments from them and other experts that America's nuclear facilities operate under the highest safety standards. It is important to note that no American lives have ever been lost as a result of a nuclear power accident. We must keep it that way. The reactor unit at Bellefonte will be modernized and will be as safe, or even safer, than the 104 nuclear reactors that currently provide 20% of our nation’s electricity.”
