NEW YORK (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry
says he supports Israel because of the Jewish nation's importance
as an American ally -- and because of his Christian faith.
At a news conference in New York with conservative Jewish leaders, Perry said "Palestinian leaders must publicly affirm Israel's right to exist, and to exist as a Jewish nation."
The Texas governor added, "I also as a Christian have a clear
directive to support Israel."
Many Christians consider modern Israel a fulfillment of biblical
Perry called President Barack Obama's Israel policy "misguided and dangerous" as the administration now struggles to thwart a U.N. vote on formal recognition for the Palestinian Authority.
Perry's chief rival for the nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, issued a statement accusing Obama of "throwing Israel under the bus."
