President Obama is set to announce his recommendations for gun control on Wednesday.
But a sheriff in Oregon has put the White House on notice, sending a letter to Vice President Joe Biden saying he will not enforce any new gun law he deems unconstitutional.
“It all started because, my deputies and I were getting questions out there from people in the community wanting to know just what my position was.” Sheriff Tim Mueller of Oregon’s Linn County says.
For the record, Sheriff Tim Mueller is against any legislation that would prevent law-abiding citizens from having certain firearms and ammunition magazines saying no crime no matter how heinous -- should prompt politicians to take away liberties.
“Making criminals out of honest citizens, that's not the right path to go down,” Muller remarks.
His thoughts are in a letter now on the way to the vice president and reads in part: "Any federal regulation enacted by congress or by executive order of the president offending the constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies, nor will I permit the enforcement of any unconstitutional regulations or orders by federal officers within the borders of Linn County."
The letter offers hope to gun shop owners like Nick Russell who are dealing with uncertainty. “It's pretty amazing letter, really, coming from a government official. He's kind of saying what a lot of us think.” Russell says.
But people well beyond the borders of Linn County are responding.
And by early evening, the letter already had more than 19 thousand likes on Facebook and had been shared more than 24 thousand times.
Most of the comments are positive, but one critic wrote "rebelling against the rumor of a law is ridiculous."
The sheriff says he's more concerned about the conversation than the consequences: “If I could ask for anything to come out of this is to just get people talking about it.”
