Zaira and David Comparan are like any other striving student.
“We want to go to college. We want to be very productive to this country,” said David Comparan, a student.
However, they are undocumented. They are able to stay in school through President Obama's Immigration Reform Law, but their father was deported two years ago. Tuesday, they squeezed into Houston County Commission Chambers to ask U.S. Representative Martha Roby what can be done to prevent family separation.
It was all part of Representative Roby’s “Martha Listens” tour. Immigration was just one of the hot topics. People also asked how sequestration will affect Fort Rucker.
"In the event that we lose our contract, we'll be losing our jobs and losing a great sum of money out of the entire economy here in the Wiregrass,” voiced Patrick Bickers, a Slocomb resident.
Representative Roby said she is against furloughs.
“For the military and the Department of Defense to take fifty percent of those cuts, it's clearly disproportionate and the reason I wasn't for it to begin with,” explained Roby, republican representative for Alabama’s 2nd congressional district.
She also addressed Obamacare, and made it clear she opposed the President's legislation.
“We have voted in the House over forty times to defund and repeal all or part of the law,” she said.
As for the Comparans, they just want the community to understand their hardships.
"They need to know what we're going through. Being a U.S. citizen, it's very hard. You know, their lives are really hard. Could you imagine being undocumented?” said Comparan.
Dothan’s airport tower also brought up questions. Representative Roby said the House is waiting to take a vote on its future funding. The deadline is September 30th.
