House republicans have passed a bill repealing the health care reform law, but the effort to undo the measure passed last year is likely nearing the end of its road. That’s because the Senate isn't expected to act on it. Despite that, Republicans still insist the fight was worth it and say they've kept a campaign promise.
Republicans lined up on the House floor to say it's time to get rid of the health care reform law.
"The current administration's unconstitutional healthcare take over is not the will of the people," said Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC.
"Healthcare is not a right," said Rep. Todd Rokita, R-IN.
But Democrats fought back.
"This is life and death,” said Rep. George Miller, D-CA. “This is the security of your family."
“Their children are covered, but what about the children of their constituents?”
After two days of debate, the measure passed the House. Not a surprise since Republicans won the majority in November.
Top Democrats called the vote a political stunt. They still control the Senate and the White House so repeal has almost no chance of becoming law. But Republicans insist repeal is a battle worth fighting.
"Our pledge was to repeal Obamacare,” said Republican House Speaker Rep. John Boehner. “Why? Because it's going to increase spending, increase taxes, and destroy jobs in America.”
"This is not about campaign promises,” said Rep. John Larson, D-CT. “This is about real people experiencing real problems in real time."
House Republicans plan to work Thursday, gathering ideas for an 'alternative' health care reform bill. But so far GOP leaders haven't given them a deadline.
The debate over repealing health care reform was delayed by a week following the mass shooting in Arizona.
