WASHINGTON (AP) -- Speaker John Boehner says he's hopeful the House can act this year on immigration legislation as Republicans privately discuss possible steps to change the current system.
Boehner told reporters Wednesday that immigration is an issue that needs to be addressed. At a separate Capitol Hill news conference, Republican Rep. David Valadao of California said Boehner had indicated to him that a vote was possible before the end of the year.
The Senate passed a comprehensive bill in June that would provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living here illegally and tighten border security.
The bill has languished in the House as tea party Republicans and other conservatives have opposed the measure.
