ATLANTA (AP) -- The Georgia House has approved a plan to redraw the state's 180 House districts, a proposal that would force 20 incumbents to face off against each other.
The new map was approved by the House Reapportionment Committee on Tuesday. It's expected to face a full House vote this week.
Democrats presented an alternative plan late Tuesday but Republicans, who hold a commanding majority in the both chambers, quickly rejected it. Democrats have argued the GOP maps purge white Democrats.
The plan would force incumbent versus incumbent matchups in 10 districts, four Republican districts in south Georgia and six Democratic matchups in the metro Atlanta area.
A Senate committee passed new maps for that chamber's 56 senators earlier Tuesday following a tense hearing.
The maps were unveiled to the public Friday.
