Ga. Lawmakers Compromise on Bill to Prevent Wildlife Deaths in Lower Flint River

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia lawmakers have struck a compromise on legislation that supporters say could prevent wildlife die-offs in the lower Flint River.

The deal approved Wednesday clarifies that people cannot take extra water added to some drought-parched streams in south Georgia when that extra water is meant to prevent wildlife from dying off. House lawmakers approved the plan 164-3. It now heads to the state Senate for approval.

The measure had stalled because of worries that Georgia environmental officials might try using the proposal to change water rights and get more water to Florida, trying to resolve a long-running water dispute with that state.

However, the plan lawmakers approved makes it clear that the government can only stop people from taking the extra water to protect wildlife, not for other reasons.
