TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A group trying to prevent gerrymandering says upcoming public hearings on redistricting are a "sham."

Fair Districts Now leaders said Tuesday that's because lawmakers won't present any proposed maps for citizens to comment on.

Voters last year approved a pair of state constitutional amendments sponsored by Fair Districts to prohibit drawing districts to favor incumbents or a political party.

Fair Districts also sent a letter to legislative leaders urging them to include maps, speed up the redistricting process and stop fighting the amendments in court.

The group also urged lifting a "gag order" against lawmakers commenting at the hearings.

A House spokeswoman said she was unaware of a gag order and that it would be inappropriate to draw maps before getting public
comment.
