Fla. Voter Emails Exempt from Public Records Under New Bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida House has passed a bill that would exempt voters' email addresses from the state's public records law if they are collected through voter registration.

The bill (HB 249) passed by a 114-1 vote. Public records exemptions require a two-thirds vote. Democratic Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel-Vasilinda of Tallahassee cast the sole `no' vote.

Proponents say releasing email addresses could have led to identity theft and voter fraud.

The bill was amended after concerns raised by the First Amendment Foundation that the language was too broad. The language was changed to specify that only email addresses obtained when voters register are exempt.
