TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida legislators are drawing up rival spending plans for education.

The House and Senate this week are starting to work on a new state budget.

The House is proposing to increase spending on public schools by nearly $741 million. That translates into a 3 percent increase or nearly $208 for every student in the state.

The Senate is proposing to increase public school spending by $651 million. That translates into an increase of 2.58 percent or $175 for every student in the state.

But the Senate is proposing higher spending on state universities and on college financial aid than the House.

The Senate for example is proposing to give University of Florida and Florida State University an additional $5 million this year because they are the state's pre-eminent research universities.
