Dale County garbage customers can expect to see a garbage fee increase in a couple of months.

“Nobody wants an increase right now the way the economy is nobody wants to do an increase, it’s a necessary evil for us to do to continue to provide a good service to the tax payer,” says Dale County Engineer Derek Brewer.

As of June 1st, garbage fees in Dale County will go up $2 a month from $12 to $14.

“We’re not in the business of making money. We just need to clear enough money to buy new garbage trucks and keep them in good order,” says Brewer.

He says this is the first time it’s gone up since 2005, and their budget is going in the hole trying to keeping up.

“Fuel has increased. Garbage trucks have increased in price from 120,000 for a garbage truck now to 150,000-160,000 for a garbage truck and we try to keep our garbage trucks in really good shape by keeping new ones in that we’re not having to work on all the time,” says Brewer.

But many customers aren’t buying it.

Allison Hamner told us on facebook, “I think it is ridiculous. Many people are on a monthly budget due to the declining economy, and many senior citizens are on fixed incomes. What about the customer service?”

While some customers would like any ideas of rate increases to go out with the trash, other say the extra $2 a month is money well spent.

“I’ve lived here since 1997 and this is our first rate increase and I don’t have any problem with it now some of these people around here might but the service we get and the way we’re attended to I’ve got no problem with that,” says Dale County Garbage Customer Joel Alberson.

Customers who choose to pay for the full year in January will still get a 5% discount.

Those who did that for 2011 will not owe any extra until next year.

Brewer says even with the increase, the rate will still be at the same level if not lower than most of the surrounding communities.

Those monthly rates are as follows.
