ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Three prominent Florida Democrats urged members of the state's teachers union to vote for independent Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate instead of Democrat Kendrick Meek.
Former Attorney General Bob Butterworth, Department of Children and Families chief George Sheldon and Florida Rep. Darryl Rouson
joined Crist Friday on the podium at the Florida Education Association conference in Orlando.
Sheldon told teachers he believes Meek has fought hard to do the
right thing, but there comes a point where it's not about the candidate but the future of Florida.
Crist is in a three-way race with Meek and Republican Marco Rubio. Meek is accusing Crist of starting rumors that President Bill Clinton, his longtime friend, tried to get him to drop out.
