SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's
presidential campaign says she was only kidding when she suggested Hurricane Irene and the East Coast earthquake were a message from God.
Sunday evening in Sarasota, Florida, the Minnesota Republican
quipped that the federal government's deficit spending may finally
have provoked a divine response.
Bachmann said, "I don't know how much God has to do to get the
attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a
hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?"'
Bachmann's campaign is reportedly downplaying the remark. Talking Points Memo says an email from a Bachmann campaign spokeswoman states it's obvious that "she was saying it in jest."
