MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The health committee of the Alabama House of Representatives passed its version of the Medicaid revision bill Wednesday. It was the first test of the bill that would eliminate the current "fee-for-service" model.
If passed by the full Legislature, the current method of paying providers for service would be replaced by up to eight regional care organizations that would receive a set amount monthly per patient for all services.
Rep. John Knight, D-Montgomery, asked if health care would be lessened or limited. State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson assured the committee that there would be no cuts in services. He said getting to appropriate care though transportation and wraparound services would be expanded.
The Senate version of the bill will be heard in committee Wednesday afternoon.
