ATLANTA (AP) - Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp defeated former Sandy Springs city councilman Doug MacGinnitie to win his party's nomination to run for a full term.
Unofficial results Tuesday show he earned 60 percent of the vote with 75 percent of precincts reporting.
State Sen. Gail Buckner is advancing to an Aug. 10 runoff in the race. State Rep. Georganna Sinkfield is vying with three other candidates for second place.
Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Kemp to the office in January after Karen Handel resigned to focus on her bid for governor.
The former state senator has vowed to reduce wasteful spending while promising to make sure elections are secure.
