Recently, I have had the pleasure to speak to many Floridians who come from varying backgrounds and professions: the Florida Land Council, the Florida Optometric Association, Professional Insurance Agents of Florida, and the Florida Federation of Republican Women. While all of these groups represent varying industries, associations, and trades they share a common concern - the current and future direction of our state. The choices we make today will have direct consequences on our children and their future. I am encouraged to see so many people in all areas of the state motivated to make changes for the better.
State government in Florida, much like the citizens it serves, is facing yet another difficult budget year. The legislature is leaving no stone unturned as it tries to find ways to reduce government spending in order to balance the budget. In fact, over the last three years spending has been reduced by over $7 billion. Considering the budget cuts that have already been implemented the legislature does not have an easy task this year. During 2000-2006, I served in the Florida House of Representatives, I am well aware of the day to day struggle that comes along with difficult decisions regarding budget cuts and program funding.
In this issue we focus again on the Tenth Amendment. The Healthcare issue has led to a national debate regarding the Tenth Amendment and states rights. We must not relent on this issue! I encourage you to read my essay that highlights Ronald Reagan's 1964 speech, "A Time for Choosing." I welcome your thoughts on this matter as we continue to fight to keep the principles of our Founding Fathers alive and well.
