Alabama governor: Taxes, gambling divide Democrats

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Money issues, particularly taxes and gambling, provide sharp contrasts in the Democratic race for governor.

Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks says that immediately after the inauguration, he would call a special legislative session to tax, regulate and expand gambling in Alabama. He's also calling for a state lottery. Congressman Artur Davis says a look at Mississippi will show gambling is not the way to create jobs in Alabama. He says Alabama should build its economy with a tax credit for new jobs and more venture capital for business startups.

Davis says he wants out-of-state companies with large timber tracts in Alabama to pay more taxes. Sparks says Davis can't do that without raising taxes on Alabama landowners. But at the same time, Sparks says he wants to close tax loopholes used by out-of-state companies.
