Retired Police Chief (Taylor, Alabama) Gerald Monday, died Thursday, August 13, 2009 at his home. He was 66. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Sunday, August 16, 2009 in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Reverend Perry Smith and Reverend Curtis Grant officiating. Burial with Police Honors will follow in Madrid City Cemetery with Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence. Born in Houston County, Alabama on August 23, 1942, Gerald was a son of the late Elton and Geraldine Watson Monday. He was a 1961 graduate of Rehobeth High School and served in the Alabama Air National Guard from 1960 until 1964. Mr. Monday dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Houston County with loyalty, integrity, and courage while representing law enforcement during his 41-year career. He served as a Lieutenant with the Houston County Sheriff Department for 15 years and as Police Chief in Kinsey, Alabama for several years before establishing a Police Department in Taylor, Alabama where he served as the first Police Chief. He retired from the City of Taylor as the Chief of Police this year. Surviving are his wife, Jannie Monday, Rehobeth, Al.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Paul Cherry, Litchfield, Arizona, Laurie and Edwin Walsingham, Chipley, Fl., Tami and Lanny Britt, Cleveland, GA.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Martha Monday, Cowarts, Al., Ronny and Sue Monday, Webb, Al., Bobby Monday, Dothan, Al., Larry Monday, Ashford, Al.; one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Bryant Dudley, Dothan, Al.; seven grandchildren, Addie & Aidan Cherry, Troy & Tommy Walsingham, Mathew & Julia Marciano, Aaron Britt; three great grandchildren, Landon & Evan Cherry and Colt Walsingham; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive. Serving as active pallbearers will be Tommy Martin, Jason McCallister, Donald Valenza, James Brazier, David Morris, Dennis Adkins and Michael Stacey. Honorary Pallbearers will be City of Taylor employees and all Law enforcement Departments. Southern Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the Monday family.
