Clogged Storm Drain Causing Controversy

A drain behind a Dothan business is causing lot of controversy.
It's full of overgrown weeds and isn't draining properly, and management says that's leading to mosquito problems.
News 4's Katrice Nolan looked into what the city has done about the problem and has more.

This is what the drain looks like right now,

Dead weeds, full of trash, and full of standing water as far as the eye can see.

We received a ureport from a business on Ross Clark Circle that did not want to give their name.
An employee says in the ureport

“This ditch has standing water in it and today at work there were 2 employees
Bitten by mosquitoes several times. With this west nile virus being a
Health issue at the present and everyone being warned about not having
Anything with standing water you would think that the city of all would
At least come out and clean this ditch to release the standing water.”

It goes on to say

“I would not be writing this but they have been called on over 8 different occasions to remedy this problem."

Assistant public works director Charles Metzger says with recent heavy rains, work orders are piling up.

"As far as storm drainage is concerned we maintain hundreds of miles of storm drain around the city," says Charles Metzger.

Miles of work that requires a lot of manpower with limited resources.

"We've got a five person crew, basically, that maintains the whole city as far as all this storm drainage that we've got," says Charles Metzger.

The city did spray this ditch to kill mosquitoes, and the overgrown weeds. But maintains, after they sprayed, it rained, washing away all insecticides.

So what do you do if you have a storm drainage issue on your property?

"All they have to do is call us 615-3810 at street division and we'll put it on the list," says Charles Metzger.

A list that this storm drain is already on.

The city also advises residents and business owners to not place any trash or lawn clippings down drains that can greatly contribute to a clogged drain.
