Seminole and Early Counties Face Budget Cuts Next Year

Seminole and Early County Schools are no strangers to budget cuts...and this year the trend continues.

"We're looking at a decrease again this year," David Ferry said. Ferry is the principal at Early County High School.

Around 300,000 dollars is planned to be cut from Seminole County, but just how much will Early County lose from the state?

"6% which is about 600,000 dollars and being a small school system that's a pretty big chunk of our budget," Ferry said.

The school system has seen budget cuts in eight of the last nine years. A big concern is what areas will see cuts...

"Transportation's going to be one of the things that's cut and some of our vocational programs will be cut," Monroe Bonner said. Bonner is the Superintendent for Seminole County Schools.

While transportation is affected, they assure it won't change bus routes or the ability to get kids to school, but there's not much left for them to cut in the future.

"We're out of things to cut, we're at the point where we can't keep up with cuts," Bonner said.

Right now the plan is not to cut any staff at Seminole County High School, but at Early County High School, it could be a different story.

"We've been losing staff members for three years now and we're losing more staff this year," Ferry said.

Some of the staff they're losing won't be because of the cuts.

"We have some people retiring that we're not going to replace. We're trying not to lay anybody off," Ferry said.

The biggest concern for both Bonner and Ferry is the effect this will have on the students.

"Educators are asked to do more and more and more, and with less and less," Ferry said.

"We've continued to do more with less, but we're at the point now where we can't continue to do more with less," Bonner said.

Unfortunately neither Bonner nor Ferry see changes in the next few years. They do know, if the cuts continue, it will hurt education more than anything else.
