School starts soon for Houston County students so law enforcement and the school board are making sure that the 2013-2014 school year is a safe one.

Security upgrades including buzzers, doors and a check-in and check-out system have been established. Deputies are also stepping up patrols.

“All of our deputies are always instructed to never drive by a school without at least driving through the parking lot, making their presence known, more of the time,” said Sheriff Andy Hughes. “Deputies will get out and walk foot patrol around the campuses on a daily basis here at our schools.”

Houston County Schools will resume classes on Aug. 19.
