Online Program Puts Kids Ahead of the Game

Ozark, AL - Walk into the Ozark Boys and Girls club and you’ll hear squeals of laughter and see kids playing basketball, a video game, or even pool. But many are drawn to a room where you’ll only hear quiet mouse clicks.

“Right now I only have to answer three questions and then I get to go to a game,” said fifth grader Hagan Jordan.

Sounds simple, and it is.
Jordan along with every other kid at the club is enrolled in Kids College. The online learning system reviews science, math and reading. With three right answers, the system rewards kids with about a minute of game time.

“We are always in favor of anything that can boost their performance especially when it is a high interest activity like working on a computer. You would not get a kid to sit down and do fifty math problems at a desk, but they’ll certainly do that here working on kids college,” said computer lab teacher Jane Bloodworth.

Because once they start playing their game, it’s all about competition. High scores at the end of the month earn a trophy.

The program is adaptable. If a student is struggling with the current grade level’s work, it will drop down to an easier level, and then build them right back up.

“We have seen such a big improvement with each report card. We see an improvement in reading, math or science,” said program coordinator Jessica Gardner.

Hagan knows he’ll be ready for fifth grade.

“Most of the people that don’t come here are not going to know about Kids College who are going to be in my class and in my grade. I’m probably going to be way ahead of them,” he said.

The program has become so popular, the club is creating another computer lab where students can use Kids College.
