(Dothan, Al)—Houston County Schools will no longer be accepting out-of-district students. On Monday board members voted in the first-ever school zone for the school system.

“It’s unusual that there hasn’t been a distinct school zone for Houston County Schools, “Superintendent Tim Pitchford said. “We are constantly building and adding to our schools, however we need to maintain a set district so we can continue to adapt to growth,” he said.

Under the new zone students must live and Houston County and will have to attend the school assigned where they live.

“Schools need to have a balance of students,” Pitchford said. “You can’t have one school that’s overcrowded and another one that’s almost empty, new zoning regulations will help with this,” he said.

Board members also hope the new zoning will help make transportation more efficient.
