Governor Robert Bentley will disperse 100 grants among the state for early education. This will provide eight schools in the Wiregrass with a new pre-kindergarten program.

Faine Elementary in Dothan will receive $120,000 for their new pre-k class.

“If we can get our children off on the right start in school, it's a win-win for all of us,” said Jerryneta Evans, Principal Project Director of Dothan City Schools Head Start/Pre-School Center.

Funshine Playschool, Inc. in Ashford is getting a nearly $82,000 grant.

“We’re going to improve Funshine only to make it better and not only can we offer social skills, but academics and everything else,” said Callie Everett, 4K Teacher Leader at Funshine Playschool, Inc.

Pre-K will prepare children for success and these new classes will also help job-seekers specializing in early childhood education. However, the only way to get this experience is by chance. Faine Elementary will choose students "lottery" style.

“We will put all the students in a hat and we will pick them out,” said Evans.

For Funshine, it’s first come first serve.

The grant will help buy classroom materials and furniture. Funshine and Faine Elementary Pre-K will be up and running by August 19th.

To apply for Faine Elementary’s Pre-Kindergarten class, pick up an application at Dothan’s Pre-school/Head Start Center on 900 Powell Street.
