JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- A Jacksonville State University professor is running for a seat on the Alabama State Board of Education.
Economics professor Cynthia McCarty of Anniston announced her candidacy for the District 6 seat on Tuesday. The post is now held by Dr. Charles Elliott of Decatur, who isn't seeking re-election.
The 53-year-old McCarty is running as a Republican. She has taught at Jacksonville State for 23 years and has served as director of its Center for Business and Free Enterprise, Education and Entrepreneurship for the past 19 years.
McCarty says Alabama can improve economic growth if it improves its educational system. She says no one currently on the state school board has higher education teaching experience, and that's needed.
The 6th District seat includes much of northeast Alabama.
