Houston County Commission Year in Review

It was the last meeting of the year for Houston County Commissioners.

News 4's Victoria Rosa was there and tells us how they felt the year went and what’s in store for 2014.

"I tell people everything is calm on top but we are paddling like crazy under the water because we've got a lot going on," said Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver.

Houston County Commissioners had their last meeting for 2013 on Monday.

Commissioners say they had a clear goal for the year and they stuck with it.

"Our staff and the commission really were focused on watching our finances this year," stated Culver.

"We're having an experimental garbage issue, we are trying it out for 300 customers. If that can go into place we'll save somewhere close to $375,000 just in garbage collection alone," said Houston County Commissioner Curtis Harvey.

"We received a significant amount of money for road work for the governors Atrip program, that we are currently implementing and of course we're doing this energy savings program that's going to save us money for many years to come," said Culver.

"The energy savings that the program implements will actually pay the debt service on the new equipment. If it doesn’t then energy saving company writes us a check so it's a guarantee for the county is what it amounts to, that we'll reach a certain amount of savings."

And they say next year, looks just as bright.

"Plan for next year is big and we are not going to mention it right now, but it's going to probably put forth about probably between 2,000 to 3,000 jobs for Houston County alone," said Harvey.

Culver stated that the one thing we continue to focus on and partner with our community partners are creating jobs and we hope to have some announcements on that shortly after the first of the year.

That makes Houston County a force to be reckoned with.

When County commissioners reconvene in 2014 their meetings will temporarily be held in the City Commission Chambers.
