Group Challenges Alabama Accountability Act

The Southern Poverty Law Center says Alabama’s School Accountability Act is unconstitutional.

The group is challenging the law in Federal Court on behalf of a group of students in the black belt.

The students say the new law still leaves them trapped in failing schools. The lawsuit states that private schools cost too much and the few public schools participating in other counties are too far away from these students.

The Southern Poverty Law Center wants the court to permanently block the act.

Of the 78 failing schools in Alabama, nearly 40 percent are located in the black belt.
