Ozark Leaders Secure More Funding for Carroll High Academies

Ozark, AL - The walls are up, the roof is nearly complete, and classrooms are starting to take shape at the new Carroll High School in Ozark. Now a $405,000 Department of Defense Grant will help fund the STEM Academy (science, technology, engineering, and math).

“A lot of times you have to cut certain things when you just don’t have the budget to do so. It will provide us that extra money, when we want to purchase something, we’ll be able to get that,” said Dana Griggs, Ozark City Schools Director of Career Technical Education.

They’ll be able to purchase things like robots for health science classes, state of the art equipment in the science labs and more professional development for instructors.

Teachers are thrilled students will have more hands-on experience rather than learning from a textbook.

“They’re learning how to be an engineer, by being an engineer. Each semester it gets more challenging and more realistic,” said Michael Smith, Carroll High School science teacher.

“It really gives all the academies traction. Anything we do with this grant to help build the STEM academy, frees up money that we can give to the other academies. The whole concept is strengthened by this one grant,” said Ozark City School Superintendent Michael Lenhart.

The grant will fully fund a working TV and recording studio. They’ll have the latest and greatest technology with Apple equipment. The students will have their own newscasts and can even record a CD. The possibilities are endless.

Lenhart said, “This recording studio may be where the next “American Idol” records their record. It could be a money-maker for the high school. We want to open this up for people who want to take their shot at Nashville or Hollywood.”

Students could begin classes in the new school this upcoming March.
