Fla. Online School Could See Cuts

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida lawmakers are pushing ahead with a proposal that could lead to cutbacks to the state's highly-successful online school.

Supporters of the Florida Virtual School, including U.S. Rep. Dan Webster, R-Winter Garden, are warning the cuts could affect the quality of the school's operations.

This move is coming in tandem with another legislative plan that could lead to private companies outside of Florida being able to offer courses.

A recently concluded investigation by the Florida Department of Education found that one company already offering courses in the state produced inaccurate reports. K-12 Inc. said in a statement it has already changed some of its practices.

The department, however, certified K-12's Florida operation for another three years before the inspector general report was finished.
