Dothan Mulling Tuition for Out-of-District Pupils

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) -- Leaders of Dothan's school system are considering charging tuition for students living outside district boundaries.

Reports say, Superintendent Tim Wilder proposed the idea in February and board members will likely vote on it later this year.

Wilder says although many out-of-district parents commute and wish to have their children attend school in Dothan, charging tuition could be worthwhile to offset the costs for Dothan taxpayers.

The newspaper reports that Ozark and Henry County charge tuition for students living outside district boundaries. Henry County Superintendent Lesa Knowles says the district will stop accepting new out-of-districts students at the end of the year.

Ozark superintendent Michael Lenhart says leaders feel that charging tuition is fair for out-of-district students compared with what city residents are paying in property taxes.
