A Few Safety Tips For Students Commuting On Foot and Bike

Some Wiregrass students brave the sidewalks in our area on foot and bike and officials are reminding commuters about different tips that will keep students of all ages safe.

Students are urged to always pay attention to their surroundings when walking to school. Walk on the sidewalk if there is one. If no sidewalk is present, walk against the direction of traffic so that you can see oncoming vehicles.

"Do pay attention because we have to understand that our children are children and they're going to play some. They're going to horse around a little bit and it's up to us on the roadway to pay attention to what's going on around us," said Captain Jeff Carlisle with the Houston County Sheriff's Department.

If on a bicycle, officials say bikers have to follow the rules of stopping at stop signs and red lights as well.
