Dothan resident Betty Peters represents more than a dozen Wiregrass counties on the state school board.
Over recent weeks, Peters has been speaking at public forums concerning the problems facing public education.
In her opinion, the number one problem is discipline.
She believes the lack of discipline has caused a lack of control in the classroom.
She says teachers are filling the role of parents.
"We don't have enough of it in our schools and it’s because the classroom teachers don't believe there being backed-up by the principals. And they in turn don't believe they are being back by the superintendent," said Peters.
Peters says that often teachers or administrators will not paddle a child due to concerns now of being sued by a personal injury attorney.
