Alabama School Calendar

New state regulations have local school districts re-adjusting what day they start the school year.

Beginning in the 2004-2005 school year, public schools in Alabama will no longer be able to start classes before Aug. 9.

The state board of education says the new resolution is necessary in order for school districts to accurately collect data, and be able to inform parents of a school's annual progress.

If a school district begins classes before this day, it risks losing federal funding under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Dothan city schools Supt. Leon Hobbs say the district has no choice but to comply.

Hobbs is encouraging parents to review a preliminary copy of next year's school calendar to voice their concerns over the new schedule before the school board votes on the matter Feb. 9.
