The State Board of Education is pushing back the last part of the high school graduation exam for one year.

The board voted unanimously today to approve new regulations that will apply the social studies part of the exam to the graduating class of 2004 rather than 2003. State Superintendent of Education Ed Richardson said proration last year delayed the validation of the social studies portion of the exam.

The other portions of the exam -- reading comprehension, language, math and science -- are already in effect. Students have several opportunities to take each portion of the exam before graduation.
