MONTGOMERY—Kenneth Coleman, the vice president of the Southern Division for the Alabama Power Company and a former professional baseball player, urged Troy University graduates Monday night to be bold when pursing their future goals.

“The traffic is always bumper to bumper on the safe road,” Coleman said.

“Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. It can benefit you more than you know.”

Coleman delivered the keynote address during spring commencement at the Montgomery Campus.

More than 200 degrees were conferred during the 7 p.m. ceremony in the Davis Theatre for Performing Arts.

Prior to joining Southern Company, Coleman was director of business development for the Metropolitan Development Board (MDB) in Birmingham.

Before that he played professional baseball for seven years in both the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs organizations, reaching as high as the AAA level.

Coleman said taking calculated risks helped him find success both on the baseball diamond and in the world of business.

“We’ve got big challenges facing society today,” he said. “Be bold, be daring and don’t be afraid to take risks.”

Coleman urged graduates to develop a clear vision for personal success.

“Find your passion and go after it with everything you’ve got,” Coleman said

Coleman is a native of Jersey City, N.J. He is an active member of the Montgomery community and serves on the boards of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, Montgomery Metro YMCA, Colonial Bank and the Capital City Club of Montgomery.
