Top Paid Private School Presidents

Alabama's longest-serving college president is also the state's highest-paid private school administrator.

Birmingham-Southern College President Neal Berte, who will retire this coming spring after 28 years, received total compensation of $357,335 during the last school year, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Berte's total compensation was 74th highest among the 594 schools listed nationally by the Chronicle. Samford University President Thomas Corts was Alabama's second-highest paid private school administrator with an annual pay and benefit package of $280,170.

Others on the list include:

  • Tuskegee University President Benjamin Payton at $261,246
  • David Potts at Judson College at $196,155
  • Mark Foley at the University of Mobile at $186,758
  • Talladega College President Henry Ponder at $150,000
  • Former Huntingdon College President Wanda Bigham at $144,038

Also on the list is the Reverend Gregory Lucey at Spring Hill College, whose pay goes to the Jesuit Community.
