Ala. 2-year college program for youths to close

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Chancellor Bradley Byrne told the state school board Thursday the department has no choice but to shutter the Community Intensive Training for Youth program halfway through the fiscal year.

Byrne said more than 60 employees were informed they were being
laid off on May 1 but they have all filed appeals and the system is
required to continue paying them through the appeals process.

He said the layoffs would have cut two-thirds of the staff and
drastically reduced the number of youths served but the cuts would
have allowed the program to keep operating at least through
October.
