Alabama Schools

State School Supt. Ed Richardson has not backed away from the bleak financial picture he's predicted for Alabama's public schools. Doctor Richardson says as many as 7,000 school workers across the state could lose their jobs as school systems continue to run out of operating cash.

There are currently about 47,000 teachers in the state and about 35,000 support personnel.

Richardson said at least 30 school systems could end in financial trouble. He said they might have to be absorbed into larger school systems to survive.
