Abbeville Elementary and Abbeville Christian Academy students were greeted by area officials on Friday.
It was all in an effort to introduce the “Police and Children Engaging in Reading” program.
Officials say teaching the students early is key to the outcome of their future.
"The way they forecast the number of rooms and the amount of space they need for prisons in the future, is they take a ratio based on the number of third graders that fail and therefore they can tell how many rooms they're going to need in prison," says headland mayor Ryan Blalock.
This is the first year the program has taken place in Abbeville.
